Working for us as an EFL teacher

At CHE we bring groups of students, who are mostly Japanese, to the UK for 2-4 week courses.

We provide intensive EFL tuition for four mornings per week while the afternoons + one full day each week are used for sightseeing tours and cultural activities. We hire qualified, experienced EFL teachers to lead the groups both inside and outside the classroom.

Since the students are mostly school age, the vast majority of the courses we run are during school holidays. International issues (recently SARS and the Iraq war) mean that it is difficult to predict in advance how many courses we will run each year. For these reasons, we are not able to provide long-term contracts to our teachers. Our short-term contracts are best suited to teachers looking for extra holiday work.

We have various study centres in England, please see our areas page for more information. We are a not-for-profit organisation which means that we do not have the resources to pay extras for accommodation or travel on top of our teachers' salaries. This means that we tend only to hire teachers who live close to our study centres.

The advantages of working for us are that the students are motivated, enthusiastic and well behaved. We provide teaching materials and resources but we are very willing for experienced teachers to adapt these to suit their own tried and tested methods.

Teach in Japan course

During the Japanese school holidays we send volunteer teachers to Japan to teach classes of secondary school students (Junior High and Senior High) for 2-4 week courses. Priority is given to people who are qualified to teach in UK state schools or have EFL qualifications. All applicants should have an active interest in Japan.

CHE pay for the return airfare along with the internal transfers in Japan. Teachers also receive free accommodation, which is normally with a Japanese host family. Fully qualified EFL teachers may also receive a one-week Japan Rail Pass.

If requested we will postpone the date of the return flight to the UK to allow for travelling time within Japan after the course.

We invite applications from qualified EFL teachers who are able to provide homestay accommodation and private English lessons to one or two students.

The majority of our students are Japanese and are at least seventeen years of age. Students must stay for a minimum of five nights and will generally stay for one or two weeks. The amount of tuition required will depend on each individual student. They may request anything from 5 to 25 hours per week. Normally there will not be any tuition at weekends.

You should be able to provide the students with a private room in your house. You should also provide three meals per day, either in the house or as packed meals. You should also be prepared to do washing for the student!

To apply to become one of our home tuition teachers, please fill in the online application form.
