Shakeel’s love of languages led him to study French and German at university, and his language skills took him into the world of finance. However, as he progressed in that environment, his language skills were needed less and less. Feeling that there must be more to life, Shakeel applied to take part in the JET programme intending to spend a year, or at most two, teaching English to Japanese students. Four years later, he finally returned to the UK, but only after repeated reassurances from family and friends that his home country had finally embraced the concept of karaoke in private rooms, and that Japanese food was readily available!
After returning to the UK, Shakeel wanted to keep some connection to Japan in his work, but the right opportunity never arose, and so he trained to be a languages teacher and spent nearly five years working in secondary schools. Then one day, he saw an advertisement for the role of Academic Planning Manager at CHE, and the rest is history…
